Of the three most
frequent motives for sitting on a bench: exhaustion, lunch and to enjoy the view, the latter is the only that is entirely voluntary.
Curiosity about the
experience of
contemplating a view forms part of our process of deciding to sit. It follows that, for those who pass a bench by, arousing interest in the view might convert contemplation of sitting down into positive action.
Having helped us to sit this device then transforms our experience, or reading, of the view by superimposing an alternative reality.
